Town of Fears places you in the role of Detective Marco, searching for answers to a chain of murders. Along the way, you will hunt for clues, meet four other characters that will help you, and battle enemies. Your progress is automatically saved after each victorious fight, but it is advisable to save your game manually in this adventure game. To save the game manually, click the menu button in the upper-left corner, then click the save game button.

Town of Fears uses a simple point-and-click interface. The bulk of this adventure game consists of dialogue which can be advanced by clicking. If you would like to know more about the screen that you are on, click the help button that is labeled with a question mark (?) in the upper-left corner of the screen.

Town of Fears uses an RPG-style combat system. Before each battle, you will have to select which character you want to use. When you are ready to fight, click the play button. Fighting is turn-based in this adventure game, so after you make your move, your opponent will make theirs. Select an action that you wish to take and an accuracy bar will appear on screen. Click the bar once to make the needle move, then click again to stop the needle. If the needle is stopped in a red hit zone, then your action will be successful. The closer the needle is to the center of the hit zone when stopped, the more effective the action will be.

You can also view your characters' attributes by clicking the attribute button before a battle. If you have attribute points available, you may allocate them to various skills and attacks to gain more power against your foes. If you want greater accuracy, increase the attack characteristic to slow down the needle and increase the size of each hit area. I advise improving the gunman skill of Detective Marco since it will automatically increase the damage done by all of his abilities, and you will still have an extra point to spend on another attribute rather than spending them all on the damage property. If you wish to reallocate points after spending them, you may do so by clicking the reset button on the left side of the screen. You will gain more attribute points as you progress in this adventure game, so it is advisable to check this screen before each battle.

Town of Fears is an adventure game with a strong focus on storyline, so if you just click through all of the dialogue to get to the fights, you will miss out on what it has to offer. Town of Fears is a great game, but if you are a more action-oriented gamer, it may not be for you.
